anhydrous and hyrated salts
defintions...
anhydrous... basically means not hydrated i.e. not water
hydrated... with water
in relation to the salts hydrated salts have the water molecules incorporated into there structure and this is know as water of crystallisation...
an example of this is...
copper sulphate
cuso4.5h2o and ths means that in thwhole it has 5 water molecules in it.
and there is also anhydrous salts that you can get which has no water molecule within it. and for the example of copper sulphate it would just be...
cuso4
and using the composition data we can work out the moles in each and from that the molecular formulae.
- first do mass over mr
- and then from the values for each work out the ratio between them.
example...
CU S O H 0
1 1 4 10 5
so this hows that there is 5 molecues of water and the molecular formular is cuso4.5h2o
